Finally got the chance to go to Birders 鳥人 at Tras Street. Happened to find this restaurant while cafe hopping to Nesuto on a weekend afternoon. Was wowed by their selection of sake, so I went to check it up, and then found out that it was opened by an actor named Adam Chen. I’m sorry if I offended anyone, but I’m not really familiar with the current actors in Singapore.
Anyway, made a reservation for 4 through Quandoo, which is a simple application for you to make reservations, and at the same time earning points for vouchers!
Expected the restaurant to be crowded with people, but there weren’t much people when we went and it could be because it was still early.
Didn’t try their sake selection because I had work the next day, so I only drank a glass of Lemon Chu-hi, and there are the food we have ordered!
The appetizer for the day was a beef salad, and it was pretty yummy. Not a big fan of beef but it was really nice especially when you can still feel the slight chewiness of the beef.
Birders Wing, is well marinated with black vinegar and sake, and the best thing about this is though it looks like it is fried, and also small, the meat inside was really tender and juicy! I really like this dish alot!
Cartilage. Topped off with mayonnaise and spring onions, the cartilage is crunchy and well done. I expected to be served with shio (salt), but I still kind of like it. Pretty yummy!
Tsukune (Chicken meatballs) with onsen egg (soft boiled egg) was one of the dishes recommended by the staff. The onsen egg comes with a sweet sauce (I doubt it is light soya sauce), and you dip your chicken meat balls into the eggs, breaking the onsen egg to let the yolk ooze out. I heard from my friend saying that the tsukune also has some soft bones inside to make it chewy, and I do think so too. If you still have leftover egg sauce, you can use to dip the ‘Oyster’, which is really succulent! I’m sorry but I forgotten to take a picture of the ‘Oyster’.
We also ordered the gizzard, liver, chicken skin, and Tail (Bonjiri)
Chicken skin. Not really what I expected, and it was just average….
Definitely preferred the chicken liver in Japan. This has too much miso, and I think the chicken liver sold at Katanashi was much better.
I do not have the pictures of the Tail that we have ordered, but the Tail was pretty chewy!
The pricing on the menu is for each stick, so be careful when you order just in case you think that it is 2 sticks for the price shown on the menu.
One thing that I did not realized was that Adam Chen was also one of the serving staff, and I only recognized when I saw a guy with a tattoo, wearing different set of clothes than the other staff, was serving to other customers. Felt really bad because I seriously have no idea who he is, and even if you tell me his Chinese name I probably would not know as I have not watch Singapore dramas for more than over 15 years.
Anyway, my recommendation to everyone is to definitely try the Birders Wings and of course the ‘Oysters’. Have yet to try the rest, and will try it out some time soon!
