Went on a very sort-of-impromtu trip with my family members, and it had been eons since I went on a family trip. Mostly, I would either travel with friends or alone, but this time, I wanted to get a short break away from work, so I suggested this trip! Plus, we’re brought a new member to this trip too!
Let me summarize about this trip before I go into the details. Something happened, and one of the members couldn’t go. I was pretty down by it, but we still have to continue on with this trip since everything has been paid for. It was really a tiring one, as it wasn’t easy taking care of a young one.
This will be a pretty short travelogue as we spent most of the item within Pratunam area, plus it was a really short getaway.
So, me and family members took Jetstar’s morning flight to BKK, and we reached early to had breakfast, and of course duty free shopping at the Airport. I spent quite alot there as there were so many things I need to buy especially on my cosmetics. Thankfully, we were able to deposit most of the stuff we want at the Airport, and collect them back upon our arrival.
After that, we went to settle the little one’s food before entering the gates. Flight to BKK was pretty okay.
After reaching BKK, the first thing to get was SIM card. I’m sure everyone will get this. I got the 7 day package, which was more than sufficient, and I could even make calls back to Singapore as and when I need. If I’m not wrong, it costed me like around 49baht for the 7 day traveller SIM package. FYI, all the shops at the arrival hall all sell the same package, so you don’t need to make any more comparisons. Just go there, queue up and get your SIM card.
Once we got the SIM card ready, we took a cab down to Pratunam area, as we were tired from the flight (even though it was only a 2 hour flight), and not to mention HUNGRY. The cab was abit of a hassle because their normal cabs (probably like SG’s comfort Hyundai cab), they only allow 3 or less people to board where as for 4 people, you will need to wait for a bigger cab. So we waited for quite sometime before managing to find a bigger cab. Once we got a cab, I tried my best to communicate, but it was total fail, so I just showed the taxi driver the address of the hotel I wanted to go.
We stayed at The Berkeley Pratunam, which was a relatively new hotel, and it looks pretty big and cool. One problem that we had was that, we thought that the North Tower was like a few minutes walk away from the Main Tower, which really was, but then when it really comes to the walking part, we had to go up to the 11th floor, walk across the bridge which has very or no conditioner on, and then take lift up to our rooms. It was abit of a hassle especially when you’re carrying alot of things if not feeling very tired. But, because we got the rooms on offer, we compromised on that. But I guess the next time, I won’t want to stay at the North Tower.
After finishing the check-up, we were not allowed to go in yet as it was still early (around 1 plus BKK time), so we headed off to Platinum Fashion Mall’s food court to grab our super late lunch.
I’m sorry that I have zero pictures on this because I was feeling really tired and hungry, that I was lazy to take my phone out, and take photos…
The food court there is pretty much similar to the one in Singapore, but just that everyone there uses a coupon, which is literally like a card with money stored inside. So I got myself a tom yum seafood noodle, while my family members got tom yum soup, cai png (you can choose any thai dish that goes with rice), and sharksfin soup, and of course mango sticky rice. The food court was pretty crowded at even 2 plus, so you can imagine how hard it was to find a seat.
After finishing up, we headed back to the hotel as we need to settle the little one’s meal and of course rest back at the hotel for a while before heading out to shop.
Room was pretty good, and we got the connecting rooms as requested. So we settled on the little’s one meal, and then headed off to Big C, which was one of my must-go places in BKK.
Big C is a supermarket, with alot of products, and the items there are super cheap. And this is what we have bought.
Alot right? Mainly is food.
Over at the pocky/pretz area, I actually overheard some aunties talking.
Auntie 1: Eh Eh, the sales lady hor, say buy 1 get 1 free leh!
Auntie 2: Is it? Buy the 12 boxes one then 12 boxes free ah?
Auntie 1: No lah, is buy single box one. Not those packed in 12 boxes one
Auntie 2: Wah, like that sibeh cheap leh!! Can buy can buy!
Auntie 3: Ya loh!! Buy those single boxes better than the bulk one leh!
I overheard their conversation, then started to take my handphone out to calculate….and in the end, the bulk one is still cheaper…. =.=
I didn’t get alot, but 2 boxes, which was more than enough for me, and I don’t think I want to lug so many back.
Also, got some omiyage for my colleagues, and then some for my own consumption, and we really splurge alot here.
It was quite heavy, as we even bought mineral water for our own consumption, and I guess we bought quite alot of water…
Once we reached back the hotel, we rested for a while before heading out for dinner.
Dinner was at one of the places, which my Dad had recommended and it was pretty far out from Pratunam. We booked a cab to head there.
It was 13 coins Tower Hotel Ratchada, located at Huai Khwang. Cab fare costed around 80 baht, which was a steal. On the way there, we saw alot of night markets. Dinner was okay except that my brother found something inside, and we all lost the appetite.
The best among what we have ordered was…….
Fried Morning Glory (aka. Fried Kangkong)
Cannot imagine right? I was shocked to see this, and the taste was really nice. Something sweet and spicy!
Dinner costed around 1,000baht or so, and it was pretty cheap as we ordered 1 plate of pineapple rice, a steam fish (which was rather big), beer, scallops, and squids.
If you want to try the food you can come and try. Pretty affordable that those shopping malls, and it has those real authentic thai feel.
Tried to get a taxi back, and it was really really hard, as most taxi would charge 200baht just to go back to Pratunam area, and I only lowered down to at most 150baht. Me and my mother stopped at the New Train Station market, while the rest went back, as the little one was already crying non-stop during dinner time to say that he wants to sleep.
Was glad that I went there even though I was already tired. Plus, I even went the wrong way, which made my mum abit pek chek, and she sort of complained that she wanted to go back already, but I insisted on walking. So, we walked back and then took a look at the map, and found our way to the New Train Market station. It was right behind a mall, which I didn’t notice.
Went there to start my shopping spree, but then didn’t manage to find what I really want, and I didn’t want to spend too much money on things that I do not need even though it was selling dirt cheap there. So after walking a round, we decided to head back, as I can see that my mum was really tired from walking even though I still had the strength to walk. Took a cab back, and cab fare was 150baht.
Rested for the day, even though I didn’t sleep much, and I woke up super early in the morning just to chiong the Pratunam morning market with my mum.
Woke up around 6:30, and then started to get ready for the Pratunam morning market. Wanted to go earlier, but was too tired to wake up. Started shopping, but most of the prices were wholesale prices, and it was really hard to bargain as I only needed 1 piece. My mum just wanted to get something to eat, so we just walk and shop until we found an area to eat, which was quite inside of the market. We found this pull-cart shop selling fried dough at 3 baht for 1 piece, and it was really yummy. Even more yummy than SG’s you tiao! My mum bought 3 to try, and she was addicted to it. We found a shop selling noodles, and thank goodness, the lady there could speak Chinese. I know my written Chinese is damn lousy, because years of not writing it, other than writing Japanese, I have thrown most of it back to my Chinese tuition teacher (Sorry, 周老师!), but spoken wise is still got 水准 one horr! Hahahaha!
Not really sure if readers will come across to this place, but if you do, do try their pork noodles! It was really nice! This shop is hidden at a corner. You can find it once you see a 7-Eleven there. The lady in the pink dress can speak Chinese, so no worries. I got myself a tom yum pork noodle soup, while my mum got the wanton noodles, which she said was okay except that the portion was small. Her wanton noodles was at 40 baht, while mine was 55 baht. Like super cheap lah! I ordered drinks from the next store, and I sort of regretted buying because Thai milk tea was super sweet even though I asked for it to be less sweet.
My thai ice milk tea!
Here’s a picture of my breakfast for that day.
Looks nice right?! I find it super nice lah!! The noodles are really nice too!
After breakfast, we dabao-ed more noodles back for the rest of the family, and my mum wanted more of the fried dough, so we bought an extra of 7 pieces. Decided to head back after that, because I was abit tired, and I wanted to shop alone, so I told my mum that we’re heading back to bring the rest breakfast, and rest before heading out again.
After reaching the hotel, the little one was in a super happy mood!
Isn’t the little one cute?! Super energetic to the max! And he likes to play alot!
After the rest finished their breakfast at the hotel, we headed off to Central World.
Didn’t buy much at Central World. Wanted to buy a dress from Earth Music & Ecology, but the price was abit steeper as compared to Japan, I decided not to buy. Bought some stationery there too, because the refills were not sold in SG. Also bought toys for the little one. After shopping, we headed to MK Steamboat for lunch.
We went for the buffet instead as we find it more cheaper. Food was so-so, didn’t get to try the roasted duck which they are famous for.
After lunch, we headed off to Naraya, where I bought some omiyage for a few people, while my mum got herself a bag, and my sister-in-law got a few goodies for her colleagues and family members. The shop was full of people, and I was abit turn off by it.
After shopping, the little one was crying as he was tired, so my brother carried him, while the rest of us continued to shop at Platinum Fashion mall. We got ourselves extra luggage as we bought quite alot of goodies. Also bought some clothes and then we headed back to the hotel first before going to Asoke Healthland for massage sessions.
Took a cab down, which was near but we were all tired.
Only me, my brother and sister-in-law went for the massage, while the rest took turns to play with the little one to keep him entertained. Me and my brother opted for full thai massage for 1.5 hours while sis in law opted for foot massage. The thai massage was great, and the lady told me that I had stiff neck and I told her that I actually faced the computer for long hours, and my sleeping position wasn’t really good.
After finishing the massage, the little one was already crying as we finished the massage at around 8pm or so. Headed off to Central World for a super late dinner, and during dinner me and brother were joking about the other table. The lady who is probably a Thai lady (definitely not Singaporean from her English accent), was speaking in this bimbotic, wannabe American lady accent, and it sort of irked me and my brother, and we just quickly finished our dinner.
Our simple dinner for the day. There was satay, but it haven’t came. Satay tasted so-so only.
After that, we headed straight back to the hotel to rest.
And for the last day, I actually ventured out to Pratunam morning market again, alone!
Walked a few rounds before heading back, and I got a few things that I wanted. Met a SG couple, and we wanted to buy together to get discount, but owner don’t allow us, so we had no choice to buy separately.
After that, headed back with food and shopping bags in hand, to the hotel, rested for quite sometime before heading to the Airport.
That’s all about my trip.
Pretty short right? Coz it was really short, and most of the time were spent inside the hotel.
Hoped you guys enjoyed this lengthy short getaway trip post!
