Woke up super early as I had to head off to Kagoshima and take the early train, and to be honest, I almost cried when I carried my luggage. It was really getting heavy.
Managed to get on the train, and had a hard time carrying it up the tram.
Got on the train, and then it was another hour plus of ride to Kagoshima.
Slept super well on the train coz I was tired from all the walking.
Reached Kagoshima, and got lost again, coz agoda told me that the hotel that I booked is near the train station, but apparently, I got off on the wrong side. Thankfully there is a information center, so I asked my way around, and managed to find the hotel!!
Did a simple check-in and left my things in the hotel until evening as I wanted to go to Kirishima in the morning!!
So I quickly left, and took the train to Kirishima!!
One of the pretty trains that is heading towards Ibusuki which is famous for their sand hotspring. I have went there once, but would definitely like to go back there again.
The trip to Kirishima is pretty long even though it is an express train. Apparently this train does go all the way to Miyazaki, and Kirishima is somewhere inbetween Kagoshima and Miyazaki.
The reason why I visited Kirishima is:
– Kirishima Shrine (famous for getting those love mikuji – coz I love them alot. I need alot of help in my love life!!)
Here’s a few pics that I’ve taken on the way to Kirishima!
The clouds covering Sakurajima.
After an hour plus of ride, reached Kirishima, and of coz to head to Kirishima Shrine, you will need to take a bus to there. Don’t be bluffed by the maps on the distance. It is really far. Initially I thought it looks near, but then thinking on what I have researched on the net, it doesn’t make sense, so I just waited patiently for the bus to come. And indeed, the bus ride was about 20 mins long!! Imagine I have to walk there would take more than 45 mins.
The flight of stairs leading to Kirishima Shrine. Thankfully it was not that steep. But it can be dreadful especially when it is summer!
And apparently, Kirishima was the place where Sakamoto Ryoma and his wife, Narasaki Ryo had their honeymoon! Nice right??!!
Halfway to Kirishima Shrine!
KIRISHIMA SHRINE!!!! It looks really pretty~~~ And I love this view alot!!!!
Got what I needed, and apparently my love luck is not that good. Hahaha, I wonder why….
Head back to the bus stop, and waited for an hour for the bus to come, but it didn’t…. So I took a cab to the train station coz I didn’t want to miss my train back to Kagoshima, as I had to cover Sakurajima in the late noon.
While waiting for a cab to come, I saw this really interesting food…..
Baked donuts!!!! It was nice!!! Too bad I can’t buy too many coz I know I don’t eat alot. But then I was glad that I tried this! There are loads of baked donuts in Kagoshima, so you should try them if you can find them. It’s not oily, and it is definitely healthier than normal donuts!!
Tooked a cab back to the station, and along the way, I chatted with this super funny taxi driver!! This is how the conversation went:
E: Can you take me back to Kirishima Station?
T: Okay. Where are you from? (He thinks that I’m from somewhere in Japan)
T: SINGAPORE??!!! (He sounded very shocked!!)
T: Lady, you are very daring.
E: er….is it?
T: Yes! so young and you’re already travelling alone. How old are you?
E: 27 this year.
T: WHAT?! You don’t look like you’re 27!!
E: But I am 27 this year….
(can’t remember clearly but he did asked what I worked as)
T: So, do you have a boyfriend?
E: erm, no?
T: You’re so cute, and you don’t have a boyfriend? You must be joking.
E: it’s true.
And then throughout the ride, I don’t know how the conversation went along that direction, but was definitely fun. I had a great talk with him. But if it is in Singapore, they will think that it’s invasion of privacy. Anyway, the taxi driver was really kind. He even tell me where is good to visit as I told him my itinerary for the next few days.
Then he also told me to soak my feet at the hotspring for foot that is just beside Kirishima Station, which I did.
He also helped me took a picture at Kirishima Station!
I think I look super ugly, but because I was carrying a backpack, and travelling around, I couldn’t be bothered with putting full makeup especially with the heat!!!
The super shiok hot spring to rest your tired feet while waiting for the train.
So I went to soak my fatty legs before heading back to Kagoshima.
Train back to Kagoshima.
Managed to head back, then decided to go to Sakurajima as I think that there is enough time.
So I took this bus to the ferry station that goes to Sakurajima!
The hotel where I’m staying at for the next 2 days.
Actually, you can buy this pass to travel around Kagoshima for just 600yen. Cheap right?
So I bought that, and I had fun travelling around with it.
You can get this pass when you can Kagoshima station, and buy it from the information center, telling that you would like to purchase a day trip pass.
Reached the ferry station, and had to wait for the next ferry, and while waiting, I saw this lady who had difficulties speaking to the person selling the ferry ticket, so I went to help out. It actually turns out that the lady wanted to buy tickets for tomorrow, but the tickets for tomorrow will only be sold tomorrow. After that, I took the ferry over to Sakurajima!
Ferry to Sakurajima!
Lowest deck is for cars and buses lower than 4.2m.
Coz I have yet to take lunch, so I took a late lunch onboard the ferry!
Super yummy soba!! You can try it, and loads of people buy it!!
Took a landscape photo of Sakurajima!
Reached Sakurajima, and the first thing was to get on the loop bus which brings you around a certain part of Sakurajima. The bus center is actually below the ferry station, so once you reach, you can just head down to take the tour bus. Please note that this tour bus is only for one part of Sakurajima. Unless you rent a car or a bicycle, you can probably walk around the whole of Sakurajima.
Almost missed this 2nd last bus that goes around Sakurajima, and thankfully the bus driver waited for me!! The bus was small and cute, but then there were too many people visiting that day, so we had to squeeze in.
The sculpture of “Portrait of a Scream” at Akamizu View Park. This sculpture was to commemorate homecoming of local rock star Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi.
While taking this photo, I had some time to take photos of the surrounding area.
Beautiful sea view of Sakurajima~
One the people from the same bus helped me to take this photo.
Okie, let me tell you this super funny story. I kept telling my friends this story, and I think it is time I shared it here.
I board on this bus, and then there was one empty seat, so I went up and ask in English if this seat is available. So the lady whom I asked the question to doesn’t seem to understand, then I asked in Chinese. Reason is because I know that she wasn’t Japanese, so either language could probably give me an answer. Then after that, she shaked her head and said a simple “no”. Then I didn’t know what gave me the courage to continue to talk to her, and then I got to know that she was from Hong Kong with her family and they only had 1 day left before they fly back to Hong Kong. So along the way, we chatted about many things such as Singapore and etc. And I actually converse with her in Mandarin, coz I can’t speak cantonese for nuts. Then…..here comes the funny story…..
There was this group (they actually speak Mandarin), and apparently they overheard me and the lady talking in Mandarin, this uncle said this ” 有人在说普通话呀！” (it means, Wow someone is talking in Chinese!), and I wanted to roll my eyes at them, but I didn’t. At the back of my head, I was thinking, “Eh, talk in Chinese very funny meh? Machiam like you never hear Chinese in Japan before”.
Okie, back to the story.
Then, the bus drove us to different points for us to view Sakurajima, and then most of the people wanted to stop at Yunohira Observatory. That is the place where you can get a pretty view of Sakurajima.
Sakurajima from Yunohira Observatory.
And then this group from Taiwan (which I actually got to know where they are from, and they were the group that said ” 有人在说普通话呀！”) wanted to take a full family photo, so I went up and offered to help them take their photo. They were so surprised to hear me talk in Chinese. I was like, “I don’t look like Chinese meh? I’m 100% Chinese loh! I didn’t put any fake eyelashes nor put on those super thick makeup leh”.
Then in return, they helped me took a photo too!
Then I talked to one of the uncles, and he was surprised that I came all the way here alone to travel, and even said that I was brave. I was like “Er…okay??” For me, I like to travel to Japan alone coz it is really fun, and there will be so many happening things.
Sakurajima is pretty right??
But then, when I went back to work (on Aug 19), I heard from my boss that Sakurajima erupted on Aug 18, and he asked if I was okay. Then I told him that I actually flew back on Aug 17 night, and reached Singapore on Aug 18.
Very pretty right?? You should visit Sakurajima if you’re visiting Kagoshima. It is one of the must to go places in Kagoshima!!
Then after that, I went to buy some omiyage, and back to the bus, then off to take the ferry back to Kagoshima. Due to time constraint, I couldn’t go to much places.
Head back to the hotel, and realise that I was staying in the same hotel as the Hong Kong family. It was a coincidence. Then I also bought the vouchers to have breakfast in the hotel, coz I wanted to try the hotel food and the hotel look so pretty lah!!!
Then went back to rest a while before heading out, coz I intend to take this night view tour around Kagoshima.
Apparently, this night view tour only operates on weekends if I remember correctly, and only at 2 timings. So I actually recommend you take this.
One of the statues in Kagoshima to commemorate Seventeen young men of Satsuma broke the Tokugawa ban on foreign travel, traveling first to England and then the United States before returning to share the benefits of the best of Western science and technology.
Board the bus and then it was off to sight seeing at night!!!
Inside the bus~
Just right outside of Tenmonkan, a famous shopping area in Kagoshima!
Dolphin Port. Didn’t get to visit there, coz I had no time!
Stopped at Shiroyama. Along the way, the lady who guide was gave a thorough explanation on the must visit places, but none of us alighted as we all wanted to see Shiroyama at night! So, it is okay if you don’t understand Japanese. You still can take this bus up to Shiroyama at night. Btw, there are no buses to Shiroyama at night on weekdays, so you probably need to get a cab to head there.
And, to be honest, when I reached there, I was like” OMG, this place is so familiar….then I suddenly remembered!! The place with the very nice view of the city!!!!”
NICE RIGHT!!!!!!! IT WAS PRETTY LUH!!!!!!
One of the fail shots.
But the night view is really pretty.
After that, everyone head back to the bus, and then along the way, we saw a few more things.
Statue of Takamori Saigo which I didn’t visited in the end. I can only see him from faraway~~~~
And then I stopped at Tenmonkan, wanting to shop abit, but then most shops were closed…..so I had to da bao food back to the hotel and makan.
Then after deciding on what to eat for my late dinner, I saw the tram with the word “Kagoshima Chuo Station”, I rushed and took the tram. Then after a while, the view looks very different, and I realize that I board on the wrong direction, and quickly dropped off at the next station. Luckily the stations were pretty near, so I walked back to the earlier station where I board the tram at, and made sure I was in the correct direction and took the bus back since I had the one day pass with me.
I don’t have any images of the hotel room, but I’m sure that I did take it, but if you’re staying in Kagoshima, I recommend you to stay at Solaria Hotel. It is really pretty and worth your every cent! I love that hotel alot! And the view from my room was absolutely great!!
I get to see the ferris wheel at night lah!!! Super nice right?!!
Well, that concludes my Day 3 in Kyushu! Hope that you all had enjoyed it!! Do look forward to Day 4, coz I actually went to see Mizuki Nana and I was super happy lah!!!!!!
